Prospect Theory or Skill Signaling?
نویسنده
چکیده
Failure is embarrassing. In gambles involving both skill and chance, we show that a strategic desire to avoid appearing unskilled generates behavioral anomalies consistent with prospect theory’s concepts of loss aversion, framing effects, and probability weighting. Based on models from the career concerns literature that formalize early social psychology models of risk taking, the results show that skill signaling and prospect theory behavior might be confounded in economic, financial, and managerial decisions where both skill and chance are important. We identify specific situations where skill signaling makes opposite predictions than prospect theory, allowing for tests between the strategic and behavioral approaches to understanding risk. D81;

Skill signaling , prospect theory , and regret theory ∗
When a risky decision involves both skill and chance, success or failure is a signal of the decision maker's skill. Adopting standard models from the career concerns literature, we show that a rational desire to avoid looking unskilled may help explain several anomalies associated with prospect theory, including probability weighting, loss aversion, and framing. Prospect theory's four-fold patt...
متن کاملSkill reputation, prospect theory, and regret theory
When a risky decision involves both skill and chance, success or failure provides information about the decision maker’s skill. Using standard models from the principal—agent literature, we show that a concern for skill reputation can help explain the central prediction of prospect theory that people tend to overweight small probabilities and underweight large probabilities. When the odds of su...
متن کاملAn extended hesitant group decision-making technique based on the prospect theory for emergency situations
Throughout the present manuscript, we are going to introduce a novel group emergency decision-making technique in which the application of prospect theory explains the psychological behaviour of the decision maker who is affected by the hesitancy and uncertainty of cognition in decision making problems.\Instead of usual aggregation procedure, we implement here a new fusion technique that ...
متن کاملExplaining Heterogeneity in Risk Preferences Using a Finite Mixture Model
This paper studies the effect of the space (distance) between lotteries' outcomes on risk-taking behavior and the shape of estimated utility and probability weighting functions. Previously investigated experimental data shows a significant space effect in the gain domain. As compared to low spaced lotteries, high spaced lotteries are associated with higher risk aversion for high probabilities o...
متن کاملModeling the Impact of Control on the Attractiveness of Risk in a Prospect Theory Framework.
Many decisions involve a degree of personal control over event outcomes, which is exerted through one's knowledge or skill. In three experiments we investigated differences in decision making between prospects based on a) the outcome of random events and b) the outcome of events characterized by control. In Experiment 1, participants estimated certainty equivalents (CEs) for bets based on eithe...
